The tough nature and fearless play of Shane Wakelin has resulted in injuries that have prevented Shane from playing more games in his career.  If it were not for the premature retirement of James Clement and the long term nature of Simon Prestigiacomo's injury then Shane may well have retired at the end of season 2007.  But Shane has found and renewed vigor and enthusiasm for the game and still loves a win and hates a loss as much as ever.

Well done Shane!

R9_MagicMagic Leon
150 Games

Leon's career has had its fair share of ups and downs.  Against Melbourne, Leon "Magic" Davis played his 150th game and once again set the MCG alight with his sublime skill.  Goals at each end and one in front of the Magpie faithful that was simply spectacular and only surpassed by Tarkyn Lockyer's trickery in the goal square.

Well done Mag!

50 Games - Dale Thomas

Dale Thomas has already notched up 50 AFL games for the Magpies and to celebrate Dale has kicked what should be goal of the year.  Exactly the same as last year's except there was no way the boundary umpire could steal this away from talented youngster.

The reigning premiers had no answers for the Pies pressure and intencity.  Dale set the standard very high early on winning plenty of the ball and making 7 tackles for the game.  Dale completely shut down last years Brownlow medalist, James Bartel.

Well done Dale!

Well done captain courageous, Scott Burns.

A very forgetable game, but an unforgetable career.

Magpie's Captain in 2008

Congratulations Scotty Burns on being named the 44th captain of the Collingwood Football Club for the 2008 season.

A fitting replacement for the magnificent Nathan Buckley.  Scott shares all the qualities that make a great Magpie captain withy all of his predecessors.  He joins an illustrious list of names that include Buckley, Brown, Shaw, Williams, Moore, Thompson, Tuddenham, Tuck, Weideman, Coventry, Richards, Kyne, Mchale, etc, etc, etc...

Have a great year Sir Scott Burns.

The collingwood football club is no doubt the most popular  football club in Australasia, Other clubs and supporters could only dream of being as popular as collingwood.
Shepparton was abuzz with Collingwood mania, The crowd estimated between 9.500-10.000 fans was testamant to Collingwoods drawing power. Granted there were a few Hawthorn supporters but the outer was Black and White. Make no mistake the Hawthorn footy club was not the major gig it could only run second to the might and popularity of the mighty magpies.
It was very much grass roots footy in the outer at an AFL venue, a bit like footy of some three decades ago- and not a bad thing i might add.
The result was not important any sausage who takes any notice of practise game results should give it away. This was all about Collingwood giving something back to the community and didn't the Shepparton folk love it-well done pies.
A special thanks to all the fine folk in Shepp who made us feel at home with kindness and hospitality..Great town Great people.
To all the lads behind the goals..well done boys.

Deakin gets Joffa's stamp of approval
Teo Pellizzeri

He's as recognisable as the black and white stripes themselves and it wouldn't have been Collingwood if Jeff ``Joffa'' Corfe wasn't at Deakin Reserve on Friday night.

Joffa was king of the kids as youngsters flocked to him looking for an autograph from the most recognisable face in the Collingwood cheer squad.

While victory wasn't quite worthy of the gold jacket, Joffa and his mates were delighted to be at Deakin following the Pies.

It had been a long time between visits for the peroxide-haired Joffa.

``I passed through here when it was four sheds on the main road,'' he said.

``About 30 years ago when I was a young bloke.''

Congregating with Collingwood fans under the Shepparton United rooms, Joffa was impressed with Deakin Reserve.

``These are real people, it's run by real people and this is grassroots football,'' he said.

``In later years I've been disappointed the game is being catered to the wrong type of people.

``But don't get me started on that.''

Joffa was pleased with the Collingwood presence in the ground.

``This is Collingwood country,'' he said.

``I can see us finishing on top of the ladder just ahead of Geelong.''

 Magpies Dive in Dubai

amagpiedives

It's comforting to know it is only February.

The sadsacks will spell doom and gloom when in reality the result means nothing although the boys would want to pick up the pace a bit when the real stuff gets here, Adelaide were good and congrats to them, cant wait to see this mob who have physically peaked in February dive into oblivion come June.

Good to see 6.000 Aussie ex-pats at the game with the growth of soccer in Australia one would think our Million dollar a year CEO would be hell bent in supporting and promoting Aussie Rules at grass-roots level in this country, Buts that's another story. The Pies will be ok all systems are still go for a mighty 2008 when the real stuff gets here.

UAE AFL Report - February 2008.

Collingwood Vs Adelaide
Ghantoot Racing and Polo Club Abu Dhabi

Saturday 9th Feb 2008.

Crows thrash magpies in the desert!!!…..Dubai debacle!!!!…... lets put things in perspective fella’s, these were the headlines that were inevitable and we expected to read following the inaugural visit of the AFL NAB cup to the United Arab Emirates , but more on that later….

Our dedicated group of AFL starved expats, eight in total and only 2 of us die hard pie supporters, departed Oman, the adjoining country to the UAE, Thursday morning for the 5 hour trip across the boarder into the UAE. Arriving in plenty of time for a long afternoon at the Dubai Creek Golf Club and Marina for a few dust settling beers and soak up the sun following a few weeks of inclement weather in the region, including rain and temperatures as low as 17 degrees.

The lead up to the clash had been big in Oman, all of a sudden everybody was an expert at the Collingwood jokes which had keep the internet system in our little country chokers for the week and sent the economy into a downward spiral as no work was done.

The non Magpie supporters, poor souls, were in a dilemma, can’t possibly barrack for the Magpies and then again can’t go for a team outside of the mighty Victoria was the cry, so all we could do was have a few more drinks over the next couple of days and see what happened on the day.

Actually not many of us can remember the nights and days that followed, we don’t get out that much over here, but there were distant flashback memories of the annual end of season footy trips that were enjoyed in our earlier days…

To set the record straight, the match was relocated from the Dubai Polo Club, which is in Dubai, to the Ghantoot Racing and Polo club which is in Abu Dhabi, this is about 20 minute drive past the last Shopping Mall as you head out of Dubai. Abu Dhabi is the capital city of the UAE; Dubai is one big construction site.

Arriving at the ground around 10.00am on Saturday morning, remember you guys are 7 hours in front of us, saw a reasonable crowd starting to form, the Auskick kids were out doing their stuff, great to see, the infrastructure, grandstands etc all were all in place, lucky the Aussie’ were organizing this event.. Seriously, the AFL had done a great job, as had the ground staff in preparing the playing surface, which as you would expect at a Polo club, was pretty well groomed and maintained. All in all the atmosphere was fantastic and great to see supporters of all teams out in their colours.

We took up our position on the half forward flank in the grandstand after the mandatory ground inspection and a bit of kick to kick with the Sherrin, and watched the crowd swell to a final total of 6201, which wasn’t a bad effort.

The curtain raiser was between the Dubai Heat and Dubai Dingo’s, both teams we understand had a bit of coverage back home to set the scene in the lead up to the event, good to see, but the Dingo’s probably didn’t mention that the Mighty Muscat Magpies hammered the Dingo’s on their recent trip into Oman last December, I have put that plug in otherwise no one else in the world will hear about it.

The match was for the Multiplex cup, the Heat thumped the Dingo’s, who amassed a grand total of 5 points for the game, you wont read that on their website I bet…., but to give the boys their due it was a hard fought game with no one holding back and a good standard of footy.

It was about that time that the export quality 4 and 20 pies were up to temperature and the big clash almost due, great to see Bucks strolling across the ground in his new role as commentator doing an interview with Dennis Comettie, there was movement starting to occur in the VIP section as all the beautiful people popped out of the marquee’s into the grandstand, good to see Eddie Everywhere in town along with the State Premier, and some heavies from the construction industry soaking up the atmosphere as well.

Unfortunately the Cheers Squads were missing from both sides, but each team received a mighty roar and we were under way after receiving the updates on the rule changes over the commentary.

The Crows looked tall, fast and super fit, it was obvious our boys were off the pace early on and struggled all day, there was some nice early work done by Ben Reid and Paul Medhurst but the forward line was lacking, the boys not making the most of decent wind advantage.

The second quarter was the killer as the Crows took advantage of the wind and hammered 2 super goals and 6 regular 6 pointers to our 1 regular goal. From then on it was basically all one way for the Crows with the Shaw brothers holding up in defense as best they could.

For some reason there was an apparent lack of moving the ball forward by our boys with criss crossing and kicking backwards which came undone in most instances, even two set shots at goal smothered and turned over by a much fitter Crows outfit. A bit of pre season work to do on disposal tactics is our collective advice for Mick.

What we learn’t afterwards of course was that there was a bit of illness in the camp following the South African adventure which would have taken the edge of the team a bit, but no excuses, the Crows were it on the day, not sure if the will hold that fitness level all year though, time will tell.

The important issue is that the Mighty Maggies and Micky Malthouse can now focus on the real job at hand…the 2008 AFL Premiership.

Overall it appears a successful adventure to the Middle East for the AFL, however their marketing department missed an opportunity by not having any merchandising outlets at the ground, there would have been some frenzied buying, particularly with the amount of families in attendance.

The weekend ended for us with a quite night and a few beers before departing the following morning for the journey back to Oman, all agreeing what a successful adventure for all involved…. Until next time, we will catch the AFL coverage on Showsport and look forward to a great season of footy. Carn the Pies……

With many thanks to Paul who resides in the UAE and took the time to remember his Collingwood family in the heartland with this match report and pics.
