I remember as a young lad at one of my first games at Victoria Park, I was awestruck at this giant of a man taking marks deep in defence which eventually won us that game against Footscray.
He was tall, athletic and the Collingwood crowd perched up on one eyed hill just loved the bloke. Thommo was Collingwood through and through and like many champion team mates never got to play in a premiership side, The joy he gave us while wearing the Black and White will live in our memories forever.
I was fortunate in later years to have befriended Thommo. He was a nice bloke who loved chatting about the modern day magpies and didn't mind a yarn about his own deeds whilst wearing the Black and White.
We once interviewd Thommo at the Lexus Centre for the Collingwood official website, the interview was a ripper especially the chapter re the infamous 1970 Grand Final and the half time celebrations in the Collingwood dressing rooms.
Thommo was a shy person but when you got to know him he was just a beaut bloke. Many times Thommo would ring for a chat or from a pub someplace wanting to know a jumper number some team mate wore in his playing days. 'Joff mate tell us quickly who wore this number, I got five bucks on it'. I would race home and look it up in my Collingwood books and ring back Thommo promptly.
It was very sad the day Thommo died, I recieved a phone call from Eddie and could not believe it, a wonderful chapter has departed us for the Collingwood heavens. Hooray for history books for they will ever tell us what a Collingwood Champion Legend our Thommo was!
RIP Thommo.
