The Coffee Room The Coffee room. A place to chill, have a bicky and talk about our beloved magpies!
Welcome to the coffee room Murray Weideman
Probably best remembered today as Collingwoods much loved (and much loathed) 'enforcer' of the late 1950s and early 1960s, during the early part of his career Murray Weideman was actually more renowned for his aerial ability. He made his VFL debut in 1953, and was on the bench for that year's grand final, in which the Magpies downed Geelong. Weideman's more brutal side only really emerged later in the 1950s as he filled out physically and began to assume more of an on-field leadership role. When regular Collingwood skipper Frank Tuck was injured and unavailable for the 1958 grand final against Melbourne, Murray Weideman stepped into his shoes and took to the responsibility as though born to it. His deliberate and continuous intimidation of his star Melbourne opponent Ron Barassi was a major factor in the Magpies eking out a shock 3 goal win.
Weidemann was much more than just the footballing equivalent of a hit man, however. He won the Copeland Trophy for Collingwood's best and fairest player in 1957, 1961 and 1962, and was regularly among the Magpies' best players in important games. In 1964, after 180 VFL games and 262 goals, he accepted a job captain-coaching Albury in the Ovens and Murray Football League. After four seasons there, during which he steered his side to the 1966 premiership, he accepted a similar job with West Adelaide, which had been in the doldrums since the early 1960s. Weidemann promptly got the Blood 'n Tars into the finals, but they bowed out at the first hurdle against North Adelaide. They did slightly better in 1969, reaching the preliminary final before losing to Glenelg, but then Weideman opted to retire as a player. Without his inspirational on-field presence, Westies seemed to lose their way, finishing 6th in 1970, and 8th in 1971, after which 'The Weed' packed his bags. He made a brief return to coaching in 1975 with his old club Collingwood, but after a solid debut season which spawned an 11-9 record and 5th place on the ladder, the wheels fell off in spectacular fashion in 1976 as the club plummeted to its first ever wooden spoon.
It is as a player, however, that Murray Weideman will be best remembered, and his selection at centre half forward in Collingwood's official 'Team of the Twentieth Century'should help ensure that his feats continue to be celebrated for many years to come.

I had the pleasure of recently meeting David at a function many miles from the heartland at a country football club in Carisbrook to celebrate the life of Mikaela and Cohen who tragically died from an epilectic seizure.
The name Galbally has a proud stench of Collingwood associated with it. David Galablly away from football is avery astute person very similar to his Father the late Frank Galbally. David is a staunch Collingwood person who loves everything Collingwood. I fell in love with David when he stared and bellowed at me and declared ' Joffa we are at war ' reference being how the football world just loves to stick it up Collingwood as much as possible. David is also a huge Eddie McGuire fan something which pleased me greatly. A witty person with a great personality. Thanks Dave for taking the time to be involved with my website. Floreat Pica Champ!

Bill Shorten was born in Melbourne and lives there with his wife Debbie.

It is with great pleasure to have Bill enter the joffasfrontpage coffee-room. Bill entered our lounge rooms on a daily basis during the Beaconsfield mine tragedy. A Collingwood man who loves the Pies. Could this bloke one day lead the Nation.

My guiltiest pleasure is.... Eating Big Macs when I know I should have a salad
What does Collingwood mean to Bill Shorten?... Winter Saturday afternoons, the old Rush stand, a great crowd
It's a bit daggy but i love...... Playing computer games
If there were five people living or dead, I could invite to dinner, they would be....... FDR, Winston Churchill, George Orwell, Sir John Monash and Queen Elizabeth the First – I reckon she’d make the rest of them shut up and take notice
The celebrity i fancy the most is...... Mate, you’ll get me in trouble! An actor I do admire is Robert de Niro
A book that means a lot to me is..... Animal Farm and 1984 by George Orwell – a good illustration of why dictatorships are a bad thing
A movie has stayed with me is.... Star Wars
A song that resonates me is.... It Had to Be You. My wife and I danced to it at our wedding
Someone who makes me laugh is.... Luke Donellan, MLA for Narre Warren and Earl Setches, Secretary of the Plumbers Union – they is hilarious
The hardest thing I've ever done was.... I haven’t done it yet, but I reckon trekking Kokoda in July will come pretty close
The things i love about football are.... Just getting out there and giving loud, free advice to people who are much faster and stronger than I will ever be!
Why made you a Collingwood supporter? I was a young teenager when South Melbourne defected, and I almost gave up footy, but my uncle convinced me to give Collingwood a go and I’ve never regretted it
The worst i game im saw was.... When we went down to Port in the semis last year. Actually, it was a great game, but a bad result – I still reckon we could have beaten the Cats!
The best game i saw was.... 1990 Grand Final, without a doubt.
At home i cook..... 2 minute noodles and toast
My first job was.... I handed out leaflets for the local chemist when I was at school, and also worked in a butcher shop
If my house caught fire the first thing i would grab is.... My wife!

My favourite toy as a child was.... my chess set
Three things people might not know about me are..... I’ve got a twin brother I once worked for Collingwood Football Club as a blue coat in the Bob Rush Stand I negotiated a pay rise for horses when I was a union organiser.
The best way i find to relax is.... Go for a run – when I was representing Australian netballers at the Australian Workers’ Union, they decided to get me fit – and now I really enjoy it.
When i was a child i wanted to be.... Doing exactly what I have been doing, representing Australians, first in the union, now in the Parliament
My biggest regret is... Having to see so many workplace tragedies which could so often have been prevented
If i were a movie actor, the character i would wish to have played is... Indiana Jones – history buff and adventurer – what a combo!
Bill will we see our beloved magpies win a flag? Of course we will! I wasn’t sure it would be this year, but after those wins against Geelong and West Coast…
I wish i had..... A magic wand to fix everyone’s problems, particularly people with disabilities.
I wish i hadn't..... Danced on the table at my 40th
If only i could.... Run a full marathon, but I think I’ll have to be happy with half-marathons for the foreseeable future…
What does Collingwood mean to me..... Football teams are like life, I reckon – you’ve got to stick with something through the good times and the bad times. That’s what we Collingwood supporters do.
Bill what first thought comes to mind re The beaconsfield mine disaster? Triumph mixed with tragedy – it was fantastic that Brant and Todd survived and are doing well, but we can never forget that Larry Knight lost his life in that collapse, and his family lost their husband and father.
I know politics is a team game but do you have ambitions of going all the way to the top to be Prime Minister?.. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd gave me the honour of being Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities, and my ambition is to see people with disabilities being given the same opportunities as every other Australian. We all deserve equal treatment, but I don’t think people with disabilities get that now.
What do you love about Australia? The people – smart, capable, and funny
What do you dislike about Australia?.... Not much – it’s hard to dislike anything about one of the luckiest countries in the world. But again, it would be a lot better if people with disabilities got to share more in that luck.
Would you don the Gold jacket whilst thanking the Australian electorate for electing you as their leader?.... :) If I get re-elected as member for Maribyrnong next election, I might take you up on it! And I’ll ask Kevin Rudd if he’d like to borrow it too. Though I’d be amazed if you let it out of your sight!
Your thoughts on the great Gough Whitlam? Great Australian, great thinker, great Prime Minister. He brought Australia into the modern age, and a lot of people benefited from his reforms – from people who wouldn’t have been able to afford to go to university, to women who finally started getting equal treatment.
In Australian history what era would you prefer to live in and why? I think these are pretty interesting times, but I would certainly have loved to have been a fly on the wall while the great John Curtin was steering Australia through the dark days of World War Two.
Thanks very much Bill for your time with us it is truly appreciated mate..All the very best to you and we hope you achieve many good things whilst in Parliament..and Go pies. Joffa.
Had the pleasure of meeting Mike at Williamstown's Burbank Oval
Champion bloke Champion singer! A Collingwood Comrade!
Mike Brady
Mike Brady was born in England and moved with his family to Australia when he was 11 years old. His recording career began in the mid 60’s with the formation of MPD Ltd (Mike, Pete & Danny). MPD Ltd went on to become one of Australia’s most successful pop groups of the late 60’s with hits such as “Little Boy Sad”. The group toured overseas, including England and Mike toured extensively throughout Vietnam during the war. When MPD Ltd disbanded, he continued to record the occasional solo single, one such single being the hit “Sympathy” which reached the National top 10.
After MPD Ltd, Mike spent the majority of his time building his career as producer and writer of advertising jingles for Television and Radio. One such piece of jingle songwriting brought Mike back into the recording industry limelight. He was asked to record a promotional song for Channel Seven’s Football program. This song being “Up There Cazaly” went on to be the biggest selling local single of its time, with sales in excess of 250,000 and has become the unofficial Anthem of all Australian Rules Football Fans.
His song “One Day In September” has become part of the Football language. Mike has since written and recorded club theme songs for many of the Football Clubs in the Australian Rules League. He also co-wrote and produced Greg Champions huge hit “That’s What I Like About Football.
Over the years, he has been responsible for some of Australia’s most catchy advertising jingles. Mike’s jingles include; classics such as “Lucky, You're with AAMI”, “Hard Yakka” and “SPC Baked Beans and Spaghetti”, and many current music tracks on TV. Mike has written jingles for most of Australia’s famous brands.
During the 70’s Mike formed his own Record Label and Record Production Company, Full Moon Records, and publishing company, Remix Publishing. Two hugely successful singles released by Full Moon were Mark Jackson’s “I’m An Individual” and Joe Dolce’s “Shuddap You Face”. “Shuddap You Face” broke the record previously held by Mike’s “Up There Cazaly” as the biggest selling single in Australian History and has been translated into many different languages. Mike and his company have produced albums for artists such as Tina Arena, Colleen Hewett, Mark Gillespie and Mike Rudd and Bill Putt. Many of Mike’s songs have been recording by leading artists including Sammy Davis Jnr, Tina Arena, John Farnham, Rene Geyer, and Dianna Trask.
During the heady boom years of the 1980’s and early 1990’s Mike “diversified” into areas not associated with his core talent – property development, hotel acquisition, timber milling, restaurant ownership and various other ventures. This was at first a great success but the good times did not last and Mike slid from the top of the heap to the bottom. This was a major lesson to be learnt – to stay true to what one knows, which in Mike’s case was music and jingles.
Over the recent years Mike has continued to write music for films and television projects including a children’s TV series for Channel Seven “The Adventures of Chuck Finn”, together with writing songs for various sporting events – “Courage In Their Eyes”, which was used to launch Channel Seven’s media broadcast for the Olympic Games and “Rise To The Moment”, which was the Paralympic Official Team Song for the 2000 and 2004 Games.
Another aspect of Mike is his live performances and motivational speaking. Mike is the driving force behind The Mike Brady Band. His band is one of the hottest corporate acts in Australia.
When Mike gives a talk, he takes the audience on a journey through his early days as a young immigrant kid, through to the exciting teen years as a member of MPD Ltd. He talks of his rise in economic circumstances as a music writer and then to the reasons he felt the need to leave it all behind for a career in business and entrepreneurialism. During Mike’s talks, he uses his music and jingles to help tell the story about the lessons he has learnt. Mike puts great emphasis on the benefits of staying close to what one knows and the power of fighting back and winning.

When Irish Eyes Are Smiling..
Above. Me and Marty chiiling out with the Gold Jacket
Round one at the MCG Collingwood defeated Fremantle. Outside the MCG at the winners circle i met Marty Clarkes Brother and two mates
Noel Brendan and John Clarke outside the MCG Round one April 2008
Noel Brendan the Gold Jacket and John and the Irish Flag.
The interview.....
Tell us a bit about your home town... Its a small fishing town with a few nice beaches. but im sure you guys will see it for yourselves when the pies visit it whilst u you are here playing dublin. i have a spare room you are welcome to stay in joffa.haha
Tell us about your Footy club by the way great website you Lads have... Yea an riocht is our local gealic football team who martin won played for aswell. we won the leauge last year with marty scoring 2 goals in the final at the end of october. its one of the biggest clubs in county down with a great pitch and facilities.
How did you first hear about the mighty magpies... Years ago probably, but really only took major interest when they first got in contact with martin.
Do you get Aussie Rules on Telly in Ireland... Yes we do. there is a station called setanta thats shows 3 games on a saturday and 1 on a sunday, so the coverage is pretty good over here
Does Collingwood have a big following in Ireland... Yes it does now, in our town there is more collingwood jersys running around than there is at the lexus centre.haha. but seriously alot of people are starting to follow the pies now because of martin and of course kevy aswell, who from what we hear from marty is doing pretty well
Your first impressions of the MCG... Unbeliveable.... what a stadium. alot bigger than any stadium at home bar croke park.
We met you boys at the winners circle after the game..did you enjoy the singing and celebrations... Yea we were lucky to come across it, but we really enjoyed all the chanting and singing. i have a great video on my camera with the anthony rocca chant..
Marty's brother john was pictured wearing the gold jacket has he been the same since... He is still scared of flys so it never made him braver.haha. but brendan hasnt stop talking since he wore it so he must take that after you joffa.
Did you boys drink the bar dry at the MCG.... we gave it a good go, enough said..............
What did the club do for you lads whilst in melbourne... We trained with the vfl team on the friday before round 1 witch was a great expierence for the 3 of us, they give us training gear aswell so we didnt look out of place, although im sure you could spot the paddys a mile away anyhow, apart from dyas who has a bit of a tan.haha they also gave us the great tickets for round 1 and round 2 up at the gabba. we had great craic with nick maxwells mum and dad.
Does Marty have a fiery irish temper or is he a pussy cat... Without doubt a fiery temper when on the footie pitch but it is because he is passionate about collingwood football club, but off the pitch he is a bit of a softie.
Our crowds are they as passionate as your home crowds in Ireland.. Not even close to be honest. i was suprised that there wasnt any chanting going on during the game, you guys should definaitley get that going during the games because it would lift the teams spirits.
We have plenty of Irish jokes back here in Oz land tell us a ripper Aussie joke.... An Australian wanted to become an Irishman, so he visited a doctor to find out how to go about this. "Well" said the doctor, "this is a very delicate operation and there is a lot that can go wrong. I will have to remove half your brain". "That's OK" said the Australian. "I've always wanted to be Irish and I'm prepared to take the risk". The operation went ahead but the Australian woke to find a look of horror on the face of the doctor. "I'm so terribly sorry!!" the doctor said. "Instead of removing half the brain, I've taken the whole brain out". The patient replied, "No worries, mate!!"
You guys mite not like that one.
Do you enjoy aussie rules.. Of course we do, its a great game although im not sure its as good as the game the 3 of us play back home, gealic football.haha. no it is great to watch but would be alot harder to play
Give us some unkown goss about Marty... Marty has a great love of the car park in kilkeel our home town, if any of you guys ever meet him be sure to ask him about the carpark, he will love answering it. he also supports the worst team in the english premiership, derby county.
I take it you lads would be huge celtic supporters in the SPL.... Noel is a huge supporter of celtic and goes over to scotland a few times a year, brendan is queens park rangers supporter and john supports notthingham forrest who are in the 3rd tier of the english league
Do you guys have a recording of good old collingwood forever if not we'll send you one.... We dont have a copy but marty made us learn it before we were aloud to go to the g!!! i dont think we have the best singing voices tho
You attended the Brisbane game in Brisbane..what did you guys think of the terriffic umpiring that gave the game to the Lions... It was petty bad but not as bad as the umpires bounce against melbourne at the weekend, what an eejit he was. lets hope big jonathan brown is a magpie next year, what a player he is.
What was your favourite memory of Australia... Without doubt it was training with the boys, they really made us feel welcome especially paul licuria and alan richardson one of the coaches. we also had a great time travelling up the coast from sydney to brisbane, a few late nites and early mornings.
Are you Lads coming back soon to see another game.... Hopefully we will be back for the grand final, and im sure you guys will meet us at the winners circle with our irish flags wrapped round us and singing good old collingwood forever. lets hope so!!!
Thanks lads it was great meeting you all at the MCG keep in touch and i will send a copy of Good old Collingwood Forever. If anyone wants to visit their website click on here www.anriocht.com
The lads wit Daisy at Training.
John "Deeksie" Deeks (born May 1, 1951) is a well-known Australian television presenter and voice-over artist for the Seven Network, where he has been working since 1975 based in Melbourne.
For many years Deeks was the announcer who said "Come on Down!" on the Australian version of game show The New Price Is Right, although frequently the program's host Ian Turpie is erroneously named as the person to voice the phrase. Deeks was also the announcer on game show Man O Man and presented the Tattslotto lottery draw for many years.
He has acted as announcer on several popular programs, making his voice and style highly recognisable, leading to his being cast as voice over artist in recreations of game shows in some dramatic works.
Since 1984, he is most well-known as the announcer of the now-defunct Wheel of Fortune, on the Seven Network.
Deeks departed Wheel in 1996 to host Family Feud, taking over from Rob Brough. After Feud was cancelled later that year, Deeks returned to his old gig as Wheel's voice-over man, which continued until the show's cancellation on 28 July 2006.
In addition to providing the audience warm-up for Australia's Got Talent, Wheel of Fortune and Deal or No Deal, "Deeksie"'s voice can also be heard on Seven, announcing the ratings before the start end of each program as well as doing the voice over for coming up next on the Seven Network everywhere in Australia, and in commercials for Australian retailers such as JB Hi-Fi.

Peter 'Magpie Mitch' Mitchell
Nice bloke, Great newsreader, Passionate Collingwood man, Peter is more than just the friendly face that reads our nightly news as you will discover, It is my pleasure to welcome Peter Mitchell into the joffasfrontpage coffee-room.
"Peter Mitchell has been the senior news presenter at Channel Seven Melbourne since late 2000. He started in the TV industry as a cadet journalist, straight out of school, with Channel Nine in 1977. He became a sports reporter and presenter, working on Commonwealth Games and then with Seven, the Olympics. In 1988 he crossed to Seven as weekend news presenter. Major stories covered have been the death of the Princess of Wales, the September 11th terror attacks, the Bali bombings and the Beaconsfield Mine disaster then rescue. Peter was born in Frankston and is married with five children."
Knock Knock ! you there joffa ?
Wouldn't keep a superstar like yourself waiting Mitch'.
Pop in pal, grab a seat and let's talk life and Collingwood although im not sure in which order that will be .
'How to do you have your coffee mate?'
Joffa i wont put you to too much trouble just the regular for me mate, White and two, 'No worries Mitch make yourself at home and thanks mate for popping in.'
How did your journey as a Collingwood supporter begin? Long story I'm afraid Joffa! My Dad was born in South Warrnambool and he barracked for St Kilda because the second Brownlow medalist Colin Watson came from that area. It was Round 1, 1965 when St Kilda played their first ever match at Moorabbin, and because we lived in Frankston, Dad thought he'd take me to my first ever match and initiate me as a 'Saint'. Problem was they were playing Collingwood and it was Peter McKenna's debut. I couldn't take my eyes off him. The Pies lost, but the black and white stripes had me hooked. To my Dad's credit, he only tried to talk me out of it a couple of hundred thousand times. Your all time greatest Collingwood player? You ask all the tough questions! I'd have to say Peter McKenna because he's the reason I chose the Pies, but Nathan Buckley is the best player I've seen in a Collingwood jumper. Peter whilst reading the news what has been the saddest story? Again, hard to pick just one Joffa, but any of them involving children and tragedy are the ones that get me. Or the ones that tug at the heart strings. The innocence and unconditional love of children. Like when Tyler Fishlock, the Melbourne boy who lost both eyes to cancer, was visiting Disneyland and he felt Mickey Mouse's face with his hands and said, "You can come to my house whenever you want, ok?" very true Peter the Tyler Fishlock story touched us all we wish the little champ all the best. Have you ever had the unfotrunate task of reading the news on the same day as the pies losing a grand final? You've hit a sore point there mate! I must have done something horrible in a former life - I've been at every one of Collingwood's losing grand finals since the draw in 1977. And when we did win, in 1990, I couldn't get out of work that day to attend the match. After Seven's coverage of the match, I read the news with a broad smile across my face, wearing a big Collingwood badge that an old bloke gave to me when I was a kid. Do you rate the Magpies a genuine chance in 2008. You bet! If Cameron Wood can share the workload in the ruck and if we have a good run with injuries we can win the whole thing. No doubt about that. Does your whole family follow the Pies. My two sons do and one of my daughters. My eldest daughter goes for Essendon and my middle daughter barracks for St Kilda thanks to Nick Dal Santo paying her classroom a visit last year. My wife Philippa has a weakening interest in the Demons. If you were not a news-reader what would you be doing? Good question Joffa! I've been very lucky to be in this business since leaving school and its been great to me. I couldn't imagine doing anything else, but I love the land, so I could easily have been a farmer. funny you mention that mate because you actually look like a farmer i can just see you now in Black and White gum=boots attending to the cows. The world has seen many great leaders...who would you vote for as number one and why? Toss up betweenNelson Mandela and Muhammad Ali. One was a President and the other should have been. Both changed their countries for the better and helped rid the world of racism. Racism causes wars and remember Ali was forced out of boxing in his prime for saying "I ain't got no quarrel with them Viet Cong." Despite Kevin Rudd's apology, we still have problems with racism in Australia. What news story would you like to read? Aside from Collingwood's premiership win in 2008, one day I'd like to interview Australia's first indigenous Prime Minister. What does Australia mean to you. A place where our children can grow free and strong. But they need a lot of help from role models. Dangers like drugs and violence lurk around every corner. Did you ever get to meet the late Sir Eric Pearce if so what was he like? Joffa, not only did I get to meet the great man, I worked with him. He was still at Channel Nine in a PR role when I was there and I remember I got into work the day after the Ash Wednesday bushfires to find an envelope on my typewriter. It was a lovely hand written note from Sir Eric complimenting me on my report the previous night. That's what he was like. The most polite man I ever met. Always giving you encouragement. You covered the Bali bombings as a human being how do you overcome such tragedies? It's not easy. I remember Channel Seven had a national telethon to raise money for the families of the 88 Australians who died in Bali and Mark Seymour came in and did an acoustic version of "Throw Your Arms Around Me" with pictures of the grieving families holding candles at the memorial service. Off camera, I just couldn't stop bawling. It was so emotional, but in a strange way, it sort of helped. Would you like to pop into the cheersquad one day, Grab the GAME-OVER banner and Gold Jacket and celebrate a pies victory? I thought there was only one person for that job Joffa! But since you're offering, I'd love to!! I'd even wear the golden wig if it meant Collingwood won! Your too good looking to wear the Gold Jacket mate, not that it would be hard to out-trump me in the good looks stakes, so on that basis i'd probabaly go hiding if i saw you running down the cheersquad aisle-way Peter if John Lennon were alive today what would you ask him? As a millionaire with a mansion and property called Tittenhurst in England, did you really mean it when you wrote, "Imagine no possessions?" Nah, just joking. I'd probably ask him for his autograph! What does Collingwood mean to Peter Mitchell? It means I've wasted a lot of last Saturdays in September! Seriously, The Club to me means a great deal. Look what happens on Anzac Day. What a day! The Pies have given me enormous joy and inspiration over the years. I've loved watching my heroes do battle. In your opinion is the game over umpired? No doubt. I hate seeing goals from free kicks. It annoys the hell out of me. I'm from the old school - free flowing footy with plenty of marking contests. And they need to sort out the play-on advantage call. Often it's not to advantage at all. How does a bloke from Frankston get to read the national news? I was from the good side of the tracks Joffa! I guess I've behaved a bit like a successful footballer. I took my chances when they came and I've made a point of being punctual and reliable. When you're raising a family and putting food on the table, it pays to try to be as professional as you can. .your my fave news-reader..Good on you Peter you have done very well. Do you have ambitions of being a weeknight news-reader? You've got me confused with Jo Hall! I've been reading weeknights at Seven since late 2000.and what a delight it is to watch Jo Hall reading the news , Channel 7 are obviously blessed with talant. Do you have good nights and bad nights at reading the news? Yes, it's like any occupation in that way, except perhaps a brain surgeon. I'd hate to be one of them and say, "Well, that was a mongrel of a day." Favourite song? What, you want just one?! If I have to leave out The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Paul Kelly etc. I'll go for "Sultans of Swing" by Dire Straits. Favourite movie? I get the idea. Just one, ay? I saw "No Country for Old Men" recently. Unbelievable movie. But I'm still having nightmares. Tell us a bit about your working day, many of us tend to believe you rock up at 5.55pm and just read the news and go home again but i have a feeling there's more to it than that. Yeah, I wish. It's more like getting into Docklands around early afternoon, getting make up put on (worst part of job), preparing afternoon updates and radio promos (I like to write all my own stuff), reading the 6pm news, then staying back to write and present the evening updates. I generally get home around 8.30. That's on a good day. As a Seven employee though, I am required to attend and sometimes host many functions - all sorts of things, from speaking to school children to charity functions. It's all part of getting your face out there. What words of inspiration would you give to Collingwood on the eve of another football season? You have powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men. Use them. Take no prisoners. Proffessionaly speaking does a news reader relish bad news knowing that more people will be watching. Believe it or not, we don't actually favour bad news over good. We only tell it like it is. If people perceive there's too much bad news, well we're just reflecting what's happening out there in our world. It's often not a pretty picture. If Peter Mitchell had three wishes to make the world a better place what would they be? Joffa, I'm a news presenter, not a genie! But for the purpose of the exercise... 1. World peace 2. Above average rainfall in Victoria 3. And new hamstrings for Nathan Buckley cant argue with any of them mate. Will you promise us all now to wear a Black and White tie if your in the news reading chair the day the mighty pies win a flag. I promise to be at the MCG to witness history!! And then I'll wear a black and white tie for the following week on Seven News! Whats been your greatest news story Being down at Beaconsfield in Tasmania for the rescue of the two miners. It started out as a tragedy with the death of Larry Knight, but the whole thing had an amazing ending. Trapped for two weeks underground - Wow! Peter your a favourite with many people and channel 7 are lucky to have you, all the very very best for the future. Its been a pleasure Joff. Good luck to you and the cheer squad too. I want to see that famous jacket a lot this year! Thanks Peter it has been a pleasure having you in the coffee-room it's going to take some work by me to get some-one bigger than your goodself..lets hope mate the Pies can win a flag pretty soon.
Alan Howe is the Executive Editor of the Herald Sun. He has been a senior journalist on the London Times and Sunday Times, managing editor of the New York Post, and editor of The Australian Weekend Magazine, The Sunday Herald and The Sunday herald Sun.
He arrived age 18 months, in Australia two weeks before the 1958 Grand Final. He was brought to Australia by his dad Jack from Newcastle-upon-Tyne- home of the other Magpies, Newcastle United. Alan has attended seven Collingwood Grand Finals and never seen them win. Rupert Murdoch made him Editor of Melbourne's Sunday Herald the day the pies won the 1990 flag. He gave away his ticket. But his first edition covered the great event. He later donated the printing press plate of that day's newspaper to the Collingwood Football Club where it is on permanent display.
Knock knock ! It's Alan Howe here joffa. Top stuff Alan, come in and grab a seat mate! Your coffee, white with two mate? Yeah thanks joffa not too much milk mate, Would you like a teddy bear biscuit with the coffee Alan? Nah she's right mate just the coffee thanks
Alan sits on the Blue couch
Joffa sits on the White Couch
When in life did you decide to follow the mighty Pies? It was pre-ordained. My Dad was a Geordie from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, home of the first Magpies. We certainly have something in common Alan we both dont win much silverware mate. Are we a genuine chance for the 2008 Premiership. No. We have not recruited the players we need. I hope I am completely wrong. Cam Wood could be the suprise packet mate will give us other options round the ground.
Your all time favourite Collingwood player?
Daics! Can I have two? Bucks! We've both certainly been very been lucky to have seen both players in the Black and White jumpers.
Who will be the next skipper?
Scott Burns. Sentimental fave Alan, I'll stick with Josh Fraser.
Your thoughts on the AFL.
It is a much maligned, but excellently run competition. Without getting both of us into strife i wont argue your comments We have a shocking record in Grand Finals Alan? would you like to make a comment ? Yes. And umpires. We would have won the 1970, 1979 and 2002 Premierships had it not been for disgraceful umpiring. While we're at it mate chuck in 1977 when the siren went when we had the ball on our foward line
Alan would we be better pushing the game into Japan rather than South Africa? We are never going to get this game happening anywhere except as an eccentric oddity. That's not a criticism; we don't have the population mass to push it anywhere else. Ireland, maybe. That's it. But it is everybody else's loss.
Do you sit with the people at the footy or in a corporate box. I sit with real people in the stands. But once or twice a year I host the Herald Sun box to try to inculcate others to the joys of our team: I have taken Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, and his new team member (and Magpie) Bill Shorten to the footy, and I have twice taken Deep Purple to the Anzac Day match. They loved it.
If Jimmy Clement had not of been pinged for deliberately taking the ball out of bounds against Geelong in the pre-lim could the pies have gone on to defeat port Adelaide.
Of course we would have won. I played for Vermont Under 15s, and they would have beaten Port Adelaide that day. The Australian woman's cricket team would have beated Port Adelaide. Joffa - you and I would have beaten them! Sensational mate we'd be like two kids living a dream
Do you support our clubs stance on the away jumper issue. Yes. We are black and white. The Bible suggests that, at the very least my soul - and yours Joffa - are blackened by original sin. But surely they are black misdemeanours on a white soul. Im chuffed to hear you say that believe it or not their are a few Collingwood people around who would like to see a change in the away strip...how scary is that!
Are Coaches over-rated? Ours is. I like a bloke straight to the point but i reckon he's been a bit stiff Alan..only 5 pounts away in 2007 and umpired out of it in 2002
The hands on the back rule..your thoughts. Sensitive, new-age nonsense. Like life itself, footy's a contact sport. Agreed! if only they knew how these rules are actually damaging the game in the eyes of all supporters
Give us some goss on Eddie.
He has married a terrific sheila, and that's always a good measure of a man. But, rest assured, the Pies without Eddie would be in strife. Sat with Carla at last years Copeland very nice person who made me feel at home, We'd be cactus without eddie and we should all never forget that.
Your final 8 this season. The Pies and seven other teams I hate. What does Collingwood mean to Alan Howe? After my family - quite a lot. But to be honest in recent decades it has felt like being increasingly penalised for a crime you haven't committed. One of the hardest gigs in town is to support the Mighty pies but we love em and always will.
Your executive editor of the Herald weekly times why dont we have a glossy front page pic of a Collingwood player every monday morning.
I try my best. Your best hasn't been good enough Alan
Your thoughts on Carlton. I have no thoughts on Carlton. Carlton is evil. Carlton should have been killed as a child.
Put into words, the passage of play with twenty seconds to go the pies are surging forward 5 points down on the scoreboard in a Grand Final.
Bucks to Daics from the impossible angle: Daics! Daics!! Daics!! Da-a-a-i-i-c-c-s-s!!! You know what just happened. You bet i dream about it every night. What young Collingwood player excites you the most and why?
Not enough of them. Our football club in terms of premiership success has struggled, do you sense things will change or pretty much stay the same.
Surely the fates have something good in store for the Magpies. It can't always be like this. Im convinced Alan the football Gods are about to smile upon the Pies.
What part of your body would you give to be at the MCG and watch the pies defeat Carlton in a Grand Final by 1 point?
You know. You played that one pretty safe mate i can only assume you mean the lower appendage area? Your funniest story being a Collingwood supporter.
Being a Collingwood supporter is not funny. It is serious. And it has been for me since day one.
Do you sulk after a loss?
Sulk? I once stormed out of the MCG, speechless and drove home. My wife called me later - from near the ground - to ask where I might be. Funny stuff..... if you make me spill my coffee you'll never get back into my coffee room mate
And last of all if there was no Collingwood who would Alan Howe support? You must be joking. Yep mate i was joking and thanks for your time and i hope you enjoyed your coffee and our chat about the greatest football club in the world
