The long slow Collingwood chant took the terraces by storm during our Premiership quest in 2010. Where to now with this chant ? Joffa Corfe
Im keen to know everyones thoughts to where we are with the long slow Collingwood chant ?
I read on Nicks prior to Round 1 NAB Cup to get the War Cry going which confused me somewhat seeing as it is only Round 1 NAB Cup in February. What wo...rries me is the excitement at everyones excitement to particiapte in this chant will kill it..
We dont want it to become boring and or people getting sick of it..What we have here is probably the greatest War Cry ever seen in AFL Terraces BUT... only if we can all decide when where to use it !
At the NAB it failed and in a sense it should of, not the right time to get it going, one cant be seen however running around the terraces with a stick threatening those who try to start it up
I'll let you on a secret re this chant and it is with thanks to Collingwood that this thing got going in September/ October and that is because they very cleverly ran this chant on the scoreboard at pre match score board screenings at MCG home games..That was the clincher The awareness so to speak and of course when it started in the outer the rest of the magpie crowd knew what to do.
Do we ask the club to run this chant on MCG scoreboard pre match as a guide to the army when we use this chant ?
What games to you reckon we should get this chant going ?
I would of thought all FILTH games especially Round 3 Premiership Flag unfurling would be the ideal time to re launch the chant in 2011
Queens Birthday. All Filth games. ANZAC day is a must All Finals matches.
Im ok with the club getting on board with the chant..The famouse you'll Never Walk Alone @ Anfield and Celtic Park is club generated and works marvellously.
Im keen for everyones thoughts at where we are and where we should go with this haunting chant. our WAR CRY chant!
Toby Sonka COLLINGWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD. enough said
Will Carison pally, don't use it too much, only on big occasions, don't let the flogs overdo it.
Justin Smith I love it. The feeling when it was 'roared' around the MCG in the Final against Geelong was awesome. It's indescribable. I feel as if it can't be used too much, because then it would lose it's meaning.
Linda Evans i lke it use at the big games as uput above!! Definetly ANZAC DAY, FINALS!!!
Luke LoBello Big matches and every final
Save it for the big moments
Tom Coates great post joffa, what I would love to see is for the army to develop a few more chants and songs. To sing alongside the iconical collingwoood one. Would take our atmosphere to a whole new level.
Ben Taylor the collingwood chant should be used against carlscum too
Jamie Brown cant use it every time as it would become boring, i agree with you with those games but i think it might also be a good idea to get it going towards the end of a game if it is a close contest just to get the boys going.
Melissa McGrath To be honest Joffa, When I first started hearing it, it sounded more like a taunt than a *woo hoo* chant! So in my opinion, i'd keep it for the games such as Anzac day and finals only!
Magnetic Maid If its over done it will be type cast just like the movies:)..still no one chants like us
Bec Stella-Frazzica
You summed it up perfectly, don't thrash it but make sure that when we do it it's heard by all... I think the big games too & i think the club should put it on the scoreboard too... Im worried to that if it's used to much it will become o...ld & boring... In saying all this i absolutely love it, i missed the game when it first happened as i just had my 1st bubs & i got goosebumps hearing it on tv but going to my 1st finals game & hearing it was phenomenal...
Go Pies...See More
Pork Chops gives ya shivers when u hear it, im gunan get it as my phone ringtone, agree with Tom above, we should start to develp more chants and songs, everyne knows we are the loudest and proudest already, lets reallly rub it in this year, we will dominate, im pumped! GO PIES
Sarah Benvenuto
Not every game should have it, I think major games like the ones agains carlscum, St Kilda and Geelong are always good to Chant, Anzac day matches and the finals.. Or a situation where we are losing but are closely Catching up to give the pl...ayers confidence.See More
Taylor O'Donnell only use it at 70,000 + games. so we know it will shake the MCG.
Cameron 'Bourke' Bourke i felt like it had been overused during the finals series last year. it overtook the regular collingwood chants in usage and i don't think that was a good thing. but toward the end of the grand final it was appropriate
Warren Ireland Your The Collingwood Prophit, whatever you do everyone will follow, GTR.
Nick Sifniotis chant whenever it feels right. the chanting during the prelim was spontaneous and earth shattering
Pork Chops hahah at the pre lim last year we had cats supporters blocking there ears and there was little kids crying, coz they were scared hahaha
Bev Cooper i think collingwood chant should be put into our national anthem
Dragan Mirceski Love the chant but I rekon people try to start it to frequently it has to be saved for the special parts during the game.
Mark Robinson like the idea of keepin it for the big games but Ben should we really waste it on those lowly scumbags, jks lol ;-)
Andrew Pickering Have variety like in epl games! The singing is bloody awesome and sounds electric at the ground... much better than collingwood clap clap clap haha!
Pork Chops and insterstate trips just to show where here, and where gunna dominate
Bev Cooper hey dragan.....all parts of collingwoods games are special so yeah the chant should be sounded everytime they get a goal....coll....ing....wood......it sounds so good
Mark Robinson yeah Ben, be good for it to be the last thing they hear as they're heading out towards the exits
Grant Anthony love it , its f#@king awesome , it won the grand final for us !
Natalie Wilkins I love it and i love being a part of it!Sing loud and proud whenever we are winning!
Dean Schumann All home games, use it as a warning. I feel it would have the best impact.
Michelle Sharrock Just love it, gives me goosebumps when I hear it played. To be part of it singing the chant is just orsm!!
Kate Norris That type of cheer runs through your body like a strong current! The energy you feel being in the middle of the chant is amazing!
Kay Howell All games ..I think it is awsome..sends tingles up my spine and makes me feel very proud to be a COOOOLLLLIIIIINNNNNGGGWWWWOOOODDDDDDDD supporter and member...I am sure it sounds great for our boys out on the ground..So please..every game Cooollllliiiinnnnnggggggggwwwwwwwoooooooooood!!!!!!!
Josie Vella Its fills the g with this spooky atmosphere & gives me goose bumps. Its awesome but probs needs 2 be saved 4 when its close 2 finals 2 build momentum & feel the full effect of 'the chant' :-)))
Daniel Connor I recon a all that you said and maybe top of the table battles
Luke Staker Whenever the team needs a lift or when we are smashing the opponent... Anzac Day, against Carlton and all finals.
Luke Staker stopping the COLLLLLLINGWOOOOODDDD chant would be like trying to stop those stupid vuvuzela's at the world cup! ;) not going to happen
Stephanie Stewart Morgan
Put it this way - does anyone here still enjoy hearing "Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi"? I was almost sick of it by GF2. Save it for the big occasions and only if we are completely dominating. The reason it sounded so good at the Prelim is th...at it was spontaneous.See More
Trent Premiers Sinni big games, and when the boys are against the tide, lacking motivation, or in very tight situaitions. help get them over the line!
Michael Belling Certainly has its place but I do miss Colling-WOOD (clap clap clap)
Adrian Hockley Its part of our game and is very much the part of the Collingwood History NOW!!!!! History always must stay Joffa
Jon Dear i think finals only...and when we are in a strong position.used sparingly is great but would hate to see(hear)it get done to death
Kathryn Di Giantomasso The collingwood chant used when we play Carlton and the last quarter of the grandfinal www we will win.
Tennielle Boettcher love it - especially in the big games, but lets also get other chants strengthened, just need more noise from the cheer squad!!!
Cangaru A Jumpin What do we use for the non games which by the way like Melbourne we thought wold be easy but wasn't last year!!! I like it in some form but has to be all in or none , if its hafl hearted its crap then!!! no good to have you have to drown out he opposition song or whatver they have hmm!!!
Jan Mathieson on the FOXTEL AFL promo ad today, they used THE CHANT at the tail end of it with Maxwell holdg up the cup in with fans, i loved it! i agree with not wearing it out,but im happy to contribute whenever
Jeff Drew Use it only to taunt rivals ie blues and bombers
John Wharf
Lots of good comments....like the bulk of them.....except the flares..idiotic !!!!!!!!!!!!! I was so enthralled like most of us when the chant first echoed out over the GEE. If it is to become a regular thing, perhaps it should be introduced w...ith Joffa's "Game Over Jacket" as a signal to start the Chant.See More
Kaylene Waters Absolutely LOVE it Joff, it is so intimidating and gives me goosebumps!
4 hours ago · The following comments were taken from Nicks Bulletin Board I think we should get it going just as St Vomit run out in Round 11. That will really piss their supporters off!!. They call it the Death Chant over on Saintsational. But I agree with you. It will lose its effectiveness if it gets overused.
do the chant at ALL games in melbourne and interstate (but works better in melb) ideal time will be about mid way into 4th qtr when we are winning. or when we are on a roll like kicked 5 goals straight etc. BUT only problem will be is other sections trying to make it take off.
This was one of the best times that the chant was used.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3P-nLzkdbPI
It shouldn't be overused however at all games it is not acceptable to have a dull atmosphere, we must always be singing. Keep this chant for the big moments or else flogs will ruin it.
It will always start from the Ponsford, I wonder if there is any way it could be player/coaching staff generated. A call from Bucks to Joffa (im sure he has your number) and the chant kicks off or a signal from Nick Maxwell (fist in the air) to the cheersquad to fire up the boys.
haha, first time i've seen that non-edited version, classic i think the chant should only be used in big games (mainly finals), other wise it loses it's luster
the best chant was that one produced in the prelim, and it wasnt planned, it was spontaneous and beautiful. trust the army to know when to sing. you cant plan moments of genius
I went to the PF feeling terribly unsure what was going to happen. But then I was in the Ponnie and I was pumped even before the match started. It was the best I've ever felt at a match and I've watched for over 40 years. There is no doubt the crowd helped the players no end. Thanks to all who had anything to do with what was a great effort! Sorry I got carried away - but to answer the question lets be selective and is there something else we could try as well.
You can't necessarily plan it every time , but it will lose its value if it's over used.
it should not be overused. it was ridiculous trying to do it during the nab cup. it should be a motivating war cry used when we need to boys to lift in situations when we're either leading or trailing by narrow margins. conversely, it should be used as a weapon to frighten the bejeezus out of the opposition.
i also liked hearing it as the players are about to enter the race before the first bounce. that's spine tingling stuff.
Agreed. Let the atmosphere dictate. The army will chant when it feels right. Having said that - Pre bounce goal square huddles are an ideal moment.
Chants can't be planned, it's an emotional thing. Chants are emotion driven. I don't agree that chants can be overdone either. If the chant is done a few times during the season it will just make it louder during the finals if we get some practice in.
Can't get enough of it
I thought it would have been really great had we got it going during the Carlton vs Richmond match the other week!
I don't want to hear it every week, and i especially don't want to hear it right at the start of games or when we are belting average sides.
Love The Chant Joffa and Great to see it's come back in the PF and GF last year. Even got it going last weekend when Ugle kicked his Magical Goal vs the Scum
It's a good start. Let's aim high. If you haven't seen it before, here's the St Pauli's Ultras with their "We love you" chant to the tune of the Little Peggy March classic, "I Will Follow Him".
Excellent! I think it can be overdone but think it will be spontaneous as well. NAB cup games do seem a bit out of place IMO perhaps if we made the GF in the cup. I don't think it can be policed, I think just let it be with special emphasis on the games noted by Joffa & of course a few others like Carrrlton & St Kilda. Remember, familiarity breeds children I missed watching the GFs at the 'G" but was privelged enough to get to the "G" for the Prelim. I've never had such a feeling before with that chant - still sends shivers up my spine.
agree with the consensus of using it at big games/big crowds. I like the idea of using it when we're clearing putting away a top 4 side (prelim last year) to rub in our dominance. I also like the idea of using it when we're coming from behind and nearly have the lead. If' we're trailing late in the 3rd and we kick 3 or 4 in a row, busting it out then would be awesome. And of course in round 3 when the flag is unfurled is a must. I also agree that it'll happen naturally. A round 1 NAB cup encounter doesn't feel like the right time. The stakes aren't high enough. The crowd isn't big enough. It may get overused and people will stop joining in when they don't think the time is right. But when the time is right, the army will know and it will sound like it did in September/October 2010. As for saintsational calling it the Death Chant, I think that is brilliant!
I must have watched the Grand Final Replay about 20 times or so (I know, weak effort, but still... ), and everytime I see the boys march up the race, to the clarion call from the Army, just as the song kicks in, I get a serious case of goosebumps. Every time.
Also, I still like the old-style chant (Collingwood! clap clap clap! Collingwood!), which I would still like to hear at our games. But I absolutley love the War Cry! As Stan Alves (I think...) said during the pre-game of the GF on ABC Radio "It's like facing the Zulus!" Damn straight! For what my 2 cents are worth, I think it would work best at the MCG, during:
- Round 3, unfurling the flag against them - ANZAC Day vs Essendon - The Grand Final Replay Re-Match in round 11 (bring your digital cameras!) - Queen's Birthday against the Dweemons - Both Geelong matches - Our second match against them in round 17 (Carlton and Collingwood at the G on a Saturday afternoon... the way it's meant to be.) - Against Richmond, as they rattle the tins... - All Finals games - Whenever else we damn well feel like it! Also, I think it would be good against the Gold Coast at Carrara, as our boys take the $5 million shine off of Junior's head... 2011, hear we come!
Come on...the chant is unreal and should not be reigned in. Use it sparingly and we'll lose it..... There has been references to "You'll Never Walk Alone". This is used every home game, when they enter and in last 5 minutes if they're winning. Saying that, Games need to be big enough. ANY home/away Melb game is big enough. NAB Cup Games...... not so sure. Also, Chanting it whilst they are entering down the race is spine tingling for both the supporters and players. Lets do it. Don't reign it in. So many people have commented on it...... both Coll and opposition supporters.
Love the chant have done since it emerged ... PF was the most spine-tingling game because of it and got our boys motivated and demotivated the CATS supporters. GF2 was great for the celebration.
Tip if you plan on making a video for uTube don't chant yourself when filming just capture everyone else
And of course it is an organic thing the moment makes it happen.
I love the ' Death Chant ' phrase i reckon we should name it that from now on. Chants can be driven on the basis the majority of people follow, if the people get the heads up the excitement will be tenfold..For arguments sake if we prepare ourselves and get the Death Chant on notice for round 3 the anticipation and excitement will build. My opinion is if we dont manage the Death Chant it's going to die.The bottom line is we want the Death Chant to go right around the outer, We want the Death Chant to stay and i reckon with sensible management we can make it ten times better than what we did in 2011. I cant see it progressing to new heights if small pockets of supporters at any game at any time try to get it going. Lets plan for it and build the excitement ?

During the 2011 season joffasfrontpage will ask the famous magpie army their thoughts on all things collingwood. To kick start we thought we'd ask about collingwood's chances of going back to back!
Beck Winderlich Back to back in 2011. There will be no draw this year....we will win:) Collingwood forever
Rob Ba better than ever this year; great premireship players, mixed with young blood and tazza's back home!!! GO PIES 2011!!!
Johnny Plakias I think we will do really well. Cant wait to see Ben Sinclair and Josh Thomas get a game :) and Chris Tarrant and Andrew Krakouer will be a bonus :)
David Hatley The current playing groups' attitude indicates we're a massive chance for BACK2BACK. Imagine how history will look at Dane Swan if he wins his 4th consective Copeland & becomes a dual time premiership player ...
Brodie Cunningham they just have to take one week at a time and they'll get their, i'm 100% certain it'll be bak to bak flags,go pies 20011. i'm stoked that tarrant is bak, cos he was my favorite. yay, go pies.
David Hope It's will be mighty pies Carlton grand final joffa ., and We will end up flog the scum
Johnny Plakias As Big Kev would say IM EXCITED :) IMAGINE WE GET 70,000 members? Faaaaaark!!!!
Luke Horne We will win it again. No other team has a list like ours at the moment. Go pies!
Wayne Scott I think the hawks will be to strong with buddy kicking another ton sorry pie fans
Kay Howell Same as last year..Premiership Pies 2011!!!..29 days til footy starts again..YAY!!!!
Wayne Vurlow well joffa we will have to wait and see but its looking mighty good as we have recruited krakeour and tarrant that has to strenghten our side even more so all looking good for 2011
Josh Moggy Flavel definitely take it again joffa we are way to strong and determined!!
Kathy Koulatsos All these comments I love but we can't get too cocky even with tazza bk I think we can do it we r strong n all our boys r looking great n sexy n fit as lol but we have competition !!! go pies let's get the BACK2BACK we deserve :)))
Brad Tribe i cant see any other team being better than they were last year so if we can play the same i think we can do it. The injection of tazza and Krakouer in the team will only boost our chances for the BACK2BACK premiership we would love to have GO PIES lets do it for Malthouse one more time
Toby Sonka ý2010 was a Jolly Ball, now were gonna have a Krakouer season! Goooooooooo Pies!
Chris Anderson I'm with Stephanie and Kathy, we have the list to do it, but I don't like to get too cocky and make predictions. I made the same "back2back" predictions after 1990 and we didn't win another final, let alone flag.
Stephanie Stewart Morgan We didn't even MAKE the finals in 91! Having read Cakewalk I can see why. But I'm still nervous.
Logue Hester
Well all things being equal, it's exciting times Joffa!! On paper our squad is better placed now than we were twelve months ago. Krakouer is going to burn. Geelong have weakened, I think we'll have the saints number psychologically for a perio...d, as sury we do with the bullies... The hawks may challenge if dealt a good hand concerning injuries etc.. But, it appears only a cursed run of luck somehow can take our destiny out of our own hands... C'arn the 'Pies!!See More
Tania Bland We have to win ! I need to get a tattoo on the other-side to even it up ! We will win !
Nick Tsakalos A different side has won the flag each year since 03...For us to go back-to-back alot of things will have to go our way...Having said that, the only thing in our way is ourselves...Time will tell...Be humble Pies supporters, but dish it out when required.....FLAGPIES 2011....!!
Natasha Small yep back to back premiers.we have it in us to do it and we will.
David Fox No injuries and we will be very hard to stop
Damien Evans Bach to back to back to back and why not make it back again....5 Straight!!! Come on Pies, lets make history! With this list it's definately a possisbility. GO PIES!
John Novak This side will rival the great collingwood sides of 1927-30 i wont be surprised if we equal if not surpass them
Steve Pritchard They have a good chance of back to back as long as they haven't got the big head syndrome from the 2010 win. They are a young side that can only get better, On the downside not happy having Tarrent back there I was never a fan of him.
Michael Belling Did you REALLY have to ask Joff? Of course it's SIDE BY SIDE, BACK TO BACK.
Thom O'Leary
We'll definitely be better. Wellingham said the boys badly wanna win it for Mick's final year. Maxwell said it's been the toughest pre-season ever and that the boys are really driven at the moment. We lost Medders, Presti, Fraser, Tarks, Ja...ck and Shane O'Bree but gained Tarrant, Krakouer and some new kids.
I think Hawthorn, Adelaide and Melbourne will be our biggest threats. I think the Saints will be psychologically scarred and their list is getting to old: Reiwoldt and Koschitski are 29. Lenny Hayes is 31.
Geelong think they can win another flag but they're list isn't getting any younger and the loss of Ablett will hurt them.
Freo still can't beat descent sides in Melbourne but they'll be tough to beat in Perth.
Bulldogs are on the slide too but they'll still probably play finals this year.See More
Thom O'Leary Carlton rate themselves but I don't rate them. They probably make the finals and lose again. Essendon are talking themselves up but it's all talk, their list is horrible. Paddy Ryder, Jobe Watson and Michael Hurley are their only really good players.
Dannielle Tucker I think the pies will do very well, whether we win the flag or not I don't know, but I am hoping so!!! GO THE MIGHTY PIES!!
Jason Busuttil With taz back and kraka on our list we should be looking good for back to back flags, if only it was easy. Alot of hard work to be done but if the hunger is there they will do it again..... Good old collingwood forever will play long and loud come grand final day, dont think we will ever get a better chance.....
Dannielle Tucker Win, lose or draw, I am a proud supporter and member. I hope they can do it for Micks last season as coach!!
Gary Holman back to back what more can me we ask all great players with some handy new recuits
Leonie Krafft we are all one eyed Pie supporters so our answers are probably the same - Winners are grinners
Warren Ireland The Mighty Collingwood Magpies Football Team, will lay waste all opposition on their way to, back to back Premierships.
Brad Tribe i think the draw put us in a place we wont make the same mistakes this year we need to be relentless
Hamiltons Photographics I saved 6 spots on my Premiership Tattoo so we need to win at least 6 more grannies b4 i cark it n im 53 now :) cant wait another 20 years
Jacqui Zoch Hoping luck will ensure minimal injuries, then there's no reason why we can't go BACK TO BACK. Mick deserves 1 more & I would like a matching tatt on my right hip. :D
John Taylor joffa i think they will do better than in 2010 and win the first gf not the second one go pies
Bruce Porter Great chance .........Hawthorn and Freo the dangers
Judy Parker-dyer Definetly the mighty magpies will be pecking eyes out again........yeahThis is our year again....no doubt
Helen Burrell Back to Back.....without a doubt....I think the only ones to watch this year are Hawthorn, the Demons and Adelaide...but only to watch them come close to us but we still beating them...in other words peeps...we need SOME competition ;))
Tony Burton
Bulldogs could be a big threat. Saints will be good again. Interested to see how Geelong go without Ablett. Carlton, unfortunately, have been on the rise and have to consider them a threat this year.
We have a strong team which i certainly ...hope can do the job again this year. So many strong players, so many good young players and a brilliant coach lead me to believe that the Pies can do it again this year.
