An event organised by the Collingwood Industrial Magpies (CiM) WEBSITE
Yuendumu Magpies defeated by All Stars
I thought I'd bring to everyone's attention a very special event coming up on the weekend 29-31 May.
Some of you would be aware of the Yuendumu Magpies football club, located 300 kms northwest of Alice Springs. They are the strongest football club in the whole of Central Australia, winning 5 of the past 7 Grand Finals in the CAFL. Last year, their full forward, Liam Jurrah, ventured to Melbourne - living at my house - to become an inaugural member of Collingwood's new VFL team. Unfortunately for us, he was ultimately drafted by Melbourne.
The exciting news is that the Yuendumu Magpies will be donning their Collingwood jumpers in the curtain raiser match at the MCG on Sunday 31 May, prior to us taking on Port Adelaide. Yuendumu will be playing a combined APY/Maralinga indigenous team from the South Australian desert. The teams will be playing for the inaugural Desert Spirit Cup. I would urge all Pies supporters to get to the game early to cheer on our brothers, the Yuendumu Magpies.
In addition, for those who may be interested, we are holding a 'Welcome to Country' ceremony and bbq at the Lexus Centre, to welcome all these young aboriginal footballers to Collingwood, on Friday 29 May at 6.30pm. Entry will be $20 for the bbq, with drinks at bar prices. This will be a pretty unique opportunity for Collingwood supporters to show our hospitality to around 60 true desert footballers.
At a time, when many of us are struggling to find many positives from the season so far, these events should provide us all with pride in the spirit within Collingwood.
The guys from Yuendumu
My good and dear friend Harry a Yuendumu elder who i met some years ago in Melbourne at a Yuendumu film night. He would sit with us in the cheersquad and join us in the winners circle.
